Ever since I was a little kid I've been a human radiator. I used to get out of school easily because it was simple to get my normally 98.9 - 99.1 body temp up enough for the school nurse to call my parents (until my mother caught on, hahaha.)
Now fast forward, I'm 26, I rarely ever use a blanket, even in the winter, im always taking off my winter coat/sweater with no issues and I become faint and overheated easily in the summer. I don't sweat excessively unless I'm exercising but I do find I am much thirstier than my husband. This has been compounded since I went vlc paleo and started breastfeeding. I am overweight by almost 60 pounds but I had this issue at a healthy weight too. I haven't taken my basal in a while but I'm willing to bet its on the high side of normal, just as it's always been my whole life.
The odd thing is, last night I had some potatoes as a treat since we had company over and I felt warmer than usual all night and this morning. I set the AC down to 70 and I'm still warm as hell and I had no PJs or a blanket on (sorry tmi.)
What's going on here? As a teenager I always joked that it was my Scandinavian heritage but is there something else weird going on here? Oh, I don't know if this is relevant but I've always had a voracious appetite and I crave salt too, though my potassium levels are fine. Could someone have hyperthyroidism and still have weight issues? My blood sugar is always perfect both fasting and non-fasting too

It wouldn't hurt to check out your thyroid, just to be sure you're not hyperthyroid. If you do so, def include the full panel - TSH, T3, T4, TPO at a minimum. Doctors rarely look at anything besides TSH, which misses a lot of conditions. If your thyroid is set too 'hot' it might not be a 'problem' but knowing that would give you good info for future protection - minimize iodine perhaps. And testing gives you a valuable benchmark anyway.
I used to be a chronically cold person with low body temp (97) who really suffered in winter and liked the heat. Now, coming up on two years paleo, I am rather a warm person with a body temp of 98 and summer is HELL this year. It was bad last year too but not this bad.
For me a lot of it is linked to caloric intake, because I am a hard-gainer my body 'burns' extra calories off through heating up my skin, rather than putting weight on. This is great for the winter though (we had no working furnace in my apartment building most of last winter, and I was perfectly comfy leaving it at around 50 degrees and never using my space heater). The best solution I've found to how sick I've been feeling in this warm weather is to eat sparingly unless I am going to be in AC for the hours following a big meal...
I also had some hypothyroid symptoms previously and was having hormonal (cycle-related) issues pre-primal. It's all linked I'm sure.
I do know that how 'hot' or 'cold' we feel is regulated in the brain, hormonally... when my father had a serious brain injury, his normal balance was thrown off and he could be freezing cold, shivering, with his body temp plummeting when it was 90 degrees out. But as far as I know it how diet and other factors affect how our body regulates our internal temp and perceptions is still kind of mysterious. I'm inclined to think that it's a better sign if your body tends to be over-warm for the temp, than it is to feel chilled all the time. People who feel warm much of the time tend to have more muscle mass and better circulation. IIRC.
Evidence supports Scandinavians burning more of their food to stay warm, the theory being that in a colder climate, people with a built in heater had a better chance of survival.
A note on body temp: average human body temp is 99+/- a huge number. The 98.6 thing is just nonsense, and in fact the average core temperature is 99.5. Plus thermometers are notoriously inaccurate. So don't let anyone tell you that you "run hot" if your temp read 99.1 - that's totally normal, and some people may run much higher.
On blood sugar: You may still be having spikes of high blood sugar that are missed in testing at home. My fasting blood sugar runs around 85, yet many doctors, nurses, etc. will gloss over a fasting sugar of say 100, "oh 100 is fine". It might be fine. I have done a glucose challenge with coca cola and watched to my horror as my sugar quickly climbed to 160 from 90 in about 25 minutes. It then dropped just as fast. If I hadn't taken like 15 samples, then I would have missed the spike.
You're probably a fast oxidizer. I learned about that when I read the book The Metabolic Typing Diet. Fast oxidizers tend to get hot, especially when they eat carbohydrates. The diet recommended for them is a high protein, high fat diet. I too am a fast oxidizer, and burn like a furnace after I eat carbs or alcohol.
I know, another one of those "diet" books. But I did appreciate that it seemed to confirm the benefit of a paleo diet in my mind.
I was always hot as a kid, too. For some reason, now that I have kids, I get colder. Though when I'm nursing, or eat/drink some carbs (especially alcohol) I turn into a furnace.I figured that since it went away when I had children (or maybe when I first started birth control...) that it was a hormonal thing. I've noticed that as someone ages they seem to get colder too. Again, makes me think it's hormones. The hot flashes when I nurse have been driving me crazy the last few days, as the outside temp heats up. Oh, and for the record, I am also of scandinavian descent, and am 25.

I have the same problem of excess temperatures. And joint pain I dont know what problem I have
I have similar issues....I can be hot, feeling like I'm sweating in 60 degree. Here is the twist. I can be seating, watching TV and sweaty hot in 60° room, with the patio door open and it's 55° or below out side. If I get up to do something, like use the restroom, I would be freezing when I return to the room. I'd close the window and curl up in my chair for 5-10 minutes and I'm hot again. Sometimes I can cool down by just stand up. In a flash I turn my sweat box overheated feeling into a icebox - change is within 1-2 minutes. This doesn't always work, but when it does it nice to have the heat relief for a bit. . My doctor referred me to a specialist for internal organs. He couldn't find anything and told my doctor if was just in my head. This guy may have been the top of his class when he graduated Harvard, but can't do the job today. Someone out there must know what is triggering the heat issues. . For those suggesting cards drive the problem, or make it worst. Well, today is a bad day, and I haven't had any significant carbs for 2 days, maybe 3.
Instead of jumping to conclusions about a disfunctional liver or thyroid problem, see your physician and include as many details as you can to them. I have this problem and it does make sense that a scandinavian has body heat issues in a naturally warmer climate and higher carbohydrate diet. -lose weight via excercise, diet and resting (being overweight doesn't help our cause here) -Drink lots of water (1oz per 2 pounds of bodyweight) -Swap out your high carb meals for high protein, high fat meals
Many , many conventional doctors diagnose patients the "modern" way. They rely on lab tests for various self serving (not always selfish reasons) reasons. The best treatment for thyroid and many other ailments was done thru learned clinical symptom diagnosis. Lab tests came a long and they were used to confirm the trained eye of the doctors. Then lawyers and pharmaceutical interest came into our health care system.
I've been to 5 doctors concerning heat intolerance and other symptoms. All did blood work, checked they thyroid. Only one did the appropriate thyroid panel. 1 checked the tsh (pituitary gland) and has been out dated for decades. This test was created by, you guessed it, a pharmaceutical company that makes thyroid medication. 1 checked the tsh and the Free T4, but used out dated parameters. Also failed to check the T3 for anything. 1 tested using totally wrong thyroid panel to diagnose anything. None of them checked they thyroid antibodies or the adrenal gland/cortisol levels with saliva testing, not blood. They all took my money and medicare dollars and diagnosed nothing. They totally missed Adrenal episode, even in in a hospital. My 5 doctor wanted me to see a Endocrinologist, and I asked for one that I knew diagnosed clinically, using lab tests to confirm his continuing education and modernization of medical science. He tested both adrenal and thyroid, sent me to a ear/nose/throat specialist as well. Two doctors that used clinical symptoms suspect Addisons disease and thyroid problems. Both suspected vocal cord issues , possible cancer. Hi, I am 33, had type one Diabetes for 20 years ( that is in pretty good control) about 5 or 10 pounds overweight and 50% Swedish. I have lived in Arizona all my life and I am always hot! It is really bad in the summers, and the heat affects my bloods sugars negatively in both ways depending on how I feel. The last week I was really hot and my blood sugar dropped low 7 times in 3 days, which is crazy as I am usually that low once every 2 weeks. I have had my thyroid tested yearly for who knows how long as it has always been fine. The doctors don't know what to do. I drink a lot of water everyday.
I was born too warm. My mom would wrap me in a blanket and I'd soak it with sweat. As I grew it continued. Always warm. Shorts and halter tops in three feet of snow while barefooted. Always felt like I was being smothered when the heat wa turned up. People touch my skin and say I feel cool. My normal temperature is between 97.2 & 97.6. If I hit 98.6 I'm running a fever.
I got heat exhaustion last week working in the shop, our a/c went out and it got up to 76 degrees. By the end of the day I had heat exhaustion.
It's like this: while relaxed in the 70's I get warm, lethargic, sweaty and start to feel yucky. when it gets to the 80's add brain fog, weakness in arms/legs, fatigue, dizziness, agitation and anxiety. Once it hits the 90's I can feel my body start to shut down slowly from the inside out. Like it's trying to conserve energy by shutting down systems. The above symptoms increase and start including inability to think or function. By the time it hits 100 I'm near catatonic. I can't function. I have to have moving air to keep going even a little bit but to function normally it has to be cool. I leave my window slightly open in my bedroom during the winter and turn the heat down just so I can occasionally wrap myself in a blanket.
This is my normal, but it's not normal and as I get older it seems to get worse.
I've had my thyroid tested numerous times. Always "within acceptable perameters". I finally insisted on a full screening and named them so he couldn't say they didn't exhist and had my naturopath read the test..."within acceptable perameters".
No diabetes though I do deal with hypoglycemia (which increases with heat) hormone levels normal.
No one has any answers and (as usual) tells me it's my imagination. After 45 years of this I'd say it's not my imagination. In the last year i've hit heat exhaustion twice. the first time I passed out. I'm afraid it's only going to get worse and no answers.
this is the first time I've read about anyone else having similar issues. If anyone gets any answers please share.
Im an 18 year old girl and my mom and siblings have always referred to me as the human radiator. Hear always radiates off of me and its so annoying. I too, at night sleep without pjs and i get so angry when my sister turns the heat in because i wake up feeling feverish and so sick. I most definitely sweat, and im not much overweight. Im in that middle area, ya know? Diabetes, high blood pressure, graves disease and chrones runs jn the family. My mom had to have her thyroid taken out but im really scared because my moms hormmones are now terribley imbalanced so i hope that isnt my problem. Anyone have any advice or opinions
I too all of the sudden a few years ago was all of the sudden hot all of the time. went to the doc thinking I was in menopause (I am 55) and was placed on hormones. They did nothing to manage the heat waves that would overcome my entire body day and night, 24-7. My doc did a general food alergy test and I found that I am alergic to eggs (yoke and whites), Whey and almonds all of which I did eat on a daily basis. I have now modified my diet excluding the above and PRESTO. . . .I do not suffer from overheating at all. It was like magic. I too have hypothyroidism which usually causes someone to feel cold. It really is wierd how these food items made me feel but I can live without them as the alternative was much worse!!!!
i am a 60 year old male, who is about to burn up. i cannot get cool. i am hot all the time. i have my ac on 72 with three fans going. i am not in the change of life, my doctor has tested me. my thyroid has been tested and it is good. i know i am at any time going to ignite. please help me, i am not overweight, maybe just a little. i do have pain in my joints including my back and take medication for pain. please help
There are many medical reasons. Blood sugar, hyperthyroid, hormonal imbalance, MS, nerve damage etc If you don't suffer from any of these medical conditions, it could be 1: Depression and stress ( if there is something that has been nagging for years, find out what it is and look for a solution- Yoga and meditation helps, Kindness and compassion helps, finding a soul mate helps, getting into some creative areas help) 2: Not drinking enough water. Drink water even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you drink one glass beer, drink three classes of water. 3: Eat flax seeds They help, they really do! 4: Avoid raw sugar. People take raw sugar thinking it is healthy. Actually it hardly makes any difference 5: Diet: Find out what food makes you more hot- Sugar/carbs/protein, Salt (sodium), caffeine, Alcohol? I know it is not easy to cut down on your favorite food/drinks. But reduce the intake. If you love taking one whole cup of coffee in the morning reduce it to half and sip slowly 6: Chew your food properly. 7: Exercise, play sports, go for a walk..cycling...
I hear you. I'm hot all the time. I sweat a lot too. From my head. It's kind of embarrassing. I'm about 30 pounds overweight. My bloodwork points more toward hypothyroidism though. I should be cold all the time but I never am. No one can figure me out.
I'm pretty much in the same boat - could get out of school any time I wanted, no blankets even in winter, wear short sleeves in the winter. However, I've always sweat a lot, and I don't think I'm of Scandinavian descent - at least not primarily.

HAHA..I am Scandinavian also. I run hot too. But...my temp is always 96.7 or something close. My inner core just feels hot. I wear tank tops in the winter with a light jacket or a zip up sweatshirt so I can rip it off. I am wondering if it is your hormones. It could be insulin. I am 57. I attributed mine to menapause but after I went paleo, I have no night sweats, and no episodes of hot flashes. I am just warm all the time and have been as long as I can remember. Thirsty may be because you are breast feeding. You should never be with out water in your hand. At least drink a whole glass each time to nurse. Keep nursing.Your baby eats 50 calories per pound per day. You will lose that weight. I also think that insulin resistance begins way before we show any symptoms. I think that anyone who has weight issues has insulin issues. Maybe they are not measurable but insulin stores fat. I am on a mission to keep insulin out of my blood stream as much as possible. No potatoes for me. I also have no appetite since I went real low carb/paleo. I am hoping that my body is finally harvesting fat from the excess 40 pounds I have been trying to lose, caused by the low fat diet my doctor put me on 20 years ago because my cholesterol was 202. I have learned much these last few weeks since finding this paleo community.
